Bestowal Dialogue

Non-Beorning

'I will allow you to stay, for I know the dangers that lie beyond my walls and I will not make you face them alone. But I do not give you this lodging for free. It will cost you nothing in coin; rather, the price will be the sweat of your brow. Many are the tasks that need doing, and in return for a safe place to stay you will see them done. Do you agree?

Beorning

'I will allow the Wizard to stay, for he is a friend of yours. But this lodging is not without cost! The price will be the sweat of your brow. Many are the tasks that need doing, and in return for allowing Gandalf to stay you will see them done. Do you agree?

'Very good. The road through [Non-Beornings: my][Beornings: our] lands has become choked in some places with brush. Clear four patches of brush, and you will have made a start on opening the way. We always have need of flint and firewood. Gather four suitable logs and search patches of soil until you find three pieces of flint. [Beornings: As you well know,] Orcs and wargs have been troubling [Non-Beornings: my][Beornings: our] family ever since my sire came down from the mountains. Slay four Orcs and three wargs, and let them know that these lands are not safe for them!

'That will be a start, <name>. That is my price. Speak to Gandalf and learn if he appreciates this favour!'

Background

Grimbeorn has demanded that if you and Gandalf are to stay at the Beorninghús, you must work for your keep.

Objective 1

Gandalf wishes to speak with you. The Wizard stands near the entrance to the Beorninghús.

Gandalf: 'Grimbeorn has let us off lightly, <name>. Four patches of brush and logs to clear? Three pieces of flint? And this is not to mention the paltry number of Orcs and wargs he asked that you slay in the fields and meads around his home.
'Grimbeorn, like his sire before him, does not appreciate surprises. Oh, he will warm up to them, in time, but at the outset he looks upon any unexpected arrival with disapproval. You will need to trust me, <name>: If Grimbeorn asks that you clear four patches of brush, you should instead clear eight! If he asks for three pieces of flint, I suggest that you bring him six! In point of fact, I think you should double the quantities of every task he set before you!
'Why? Let us just say that it is important for us to be on the good side of the Beorninghús's master. You will thank me for it, when all is said and done.'

Objective 2

  • Clear brush from roads in the Beorning-lands near the Beorninghús (0/8)
  • Collect firewood in the Beorning-lands near the Beorninghús (0/8)
  • Search patches of soil for flint (0/6)
  • Defeat Orcs in the Beorning-lands (0/8)
  • Defeat wargs in the Beorning-lands (0/6)

Grimbeorn has tasked you with a number of errands to undertake in the Beorning-lands, and Gandalf has helpfully doubled the required quantities of each.

Cleared brush from the roads (8/8)
Collected firewood (8/8)
Collected useful pieces of flint (6/6)
Defeated Orcs in the Beorning-lands (8/8)
Defeated wargs in the Beorning-lands (6/6)

Objective 3

Grimbeorn is at the Beorninghús, in the Beorning-lands.

Non-Beorning

Grimbeorn: 'You have done more than I asked, <name>.'
Grimbeorn squints at you suspiciously.
'Why? Is this the Wizard's doing? Why would you do more than I asked? What are you trying to prove, <class>?'

Beorning

Grimbeorn: 'You have done more than I asked, <name>. I am proud to call you my kin.'
